Scope and Content
This collection contains two ledgers dated 1905-1908 and 1915-1916. The latter notes Alameda, N.M. as the location. The ledgers list names, dates, store goods purchased and prices. The most common items listed are nails, wire, ribbon, sardines, coffee, sugar, beer and liquor.

Biography / History
Ludwig Kempenich was born in Germany on February 7, 1861. At age twenty he emigrated to the U.S. and by 1885 was a merchant in Corrales (Alameda area), New Mexico. In 1891, as a resident of Alameda, N.M., he applied to become a naturalized citizen. By 1900, Kempenich and his family were living on Copper Avenue in Albuquerque and operated a retail dry goods store on Central Avenue. Ludwig Kempenich died on Jan. 3, 1927. His body was buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Albuquerque.
