Letters to and from Matanzas, Cuba

 Collection
Identifier: MSS-893-SC

Scope and Content

The bulk of the letters in this collection (16) are written by ship chandler, Antonio-Fernandez Ceballos in Matanzas, Cuba to his “estranged" wife, living in Maine. The letters begin and end affectionately but carry a bullying tone. Caballos attempts to convince his wife to return to Cuba and generally report on whether or not he has received a letter from her, his and their children’s health, day to day events, and the weather. Throughout the correspondence, Ceballos’ comments on the depressed economic conditions in Cuba including the lack of commerce and shipping, deserted coffee houses and hotels, people’s inability to pay their taxes, and increased crime. The letters provide a glimpse into aspects of domestic life, social attitudes, and gender roles from one individual living in Cuba in the late 19th century.

Six additional letters to Mary (5) and Antonio (1) relay personal news. A calling card for Frank H. Pierce, American consul in Matanzas is also included.
