Scope and Content

The scrapbook contains mementos from Unwin’s travels across the United States, as well as materials relating to his journeys by ship between London and the U.S. Included are Unwin’s handwritten itinerary of his journey, as well as itineraries and passenger lists from the S.S. Minneapolis and Mesaba, as well as a plan of the Mesaba. Post cards and photographs, pamphlets, brochures, programs, railroad route maps and other ephemera document stops and highlights, including New York City, Grand Canyon, Pike’s Peak, Garden of the Gods, Lamy and Santa Fe, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, etc. Brochures of interest include “The Truth in regard to Santa Fe by the Usher of the Oldest Church," “Interesting Items about the Old Church," and “Articles of Faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." A 9 page handwritten narrative describes life aboard the S. S. Mesaba.

Biography / History

Roland Unwin was a member of London’s T. Fisher Unwin publishing family. On September, 7, 1912, Roland Unwin set sail aboard the S. S. Minneapolis from London to New York for a nearly one year grand tour of the United States. Unwin spent the first six months in New York and then began travelling the country in earnest: Detroit, Chicago, Denver, Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods, Salt Lake City, Pendleton (OR), Spokane, Grand Forks, Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Grand Canyon, Lamy and Santa Fe (NM), Trinidad (CO), Ft. Worth, Austin, Houston, New Orleans. In New Orleans, he boarded the steamship Antilles to return to NY, and then on to Boston, Washington, Annapolis, and Baltimore. Finally, Unwin arrived back in London on July 16, having sailed from Philadelphia on the ship, Mesaba.
