Biography / History

The Recuerda a César Chávez Committee was formed in 1993, after the death of César Chávez. The Committee is comprised of students, educators, labor unions, community members, and religious organizations working together to honor César Chávez and to continue his work in Albuquerque and throughout New Mexico. The group's mission is education and action in support of "la causa," the struggle for social justice for farm workers and other labor groups. Achievements include a grape ban on the University of New Mexico campus, renaming Stadium Blvd. (Albuquerque) to Avenida César Chávez, the inauguration of the César Chávez Community Center, "Llaves para Chávez" (the Committee collected keys to melt down into a memorial for César Chávez), annual proclamations commemorating Chávez' birthday from the Albuquerque City Council, Mayor's office, and Albuquerque Human Rights Office. The committee remains in existence today.
