Scope and Content

The collection consists of 12 oral interviews, conducted by Jon Hunner for his MA thesis, Shooting the Dragon: Coming of Age in Los Alamos, University of New Mexico, 1992. The interviews delve into the social history of Los Alamos, from the perspective of individuals who came of age in Los Alamos, NM, 1943-1968. Interviewees were children of scientists, technicians, security, and maintenance workers. According to Hunner, many of the informants were nostalgic about their childhood in Los Alamos, but regretted the legacy that the town has bequeathed the world.

There are no transcripts or tape logs.

Biography / History

Jon Hunner is Professor of History and Director of the Public History program at New Mexico State University, Las Cruces. He received his BA from St. John's College in Santa Fe, NM (1974) and his MA (1992) and PhD (1996), both in history, from the University of New Mexico. His MA thesis is Shooting the Dragon: Coming of Age in Los Alamos; his dissertation is Family Secrets: The Growth of Community in Los Alamos, 1943-1957.
