Biography / History

Inspired by Jack Rittenhouse of Stagecoach Press and Phil Cooke of the Press of the Territorian, Andy Gregg (aka Andrew K. Gregg, Thomas Vinegar, Tom Vinegar, Sneed Hearn, Harold Bayer) was the founder, owner, typesetter, printer, and illustrator of Vinegar Tom Press. Gregg's vision was to produce original material or reprints of "historic and unusual interest" to sell to collectors, historians, and tourists. Vinegar Tom Press produced 15 book titles and assorted ephemera including Christmas cards, catalogs, menus, calendars, flyers, etc. between 1968 and 1973. In 1972, Gregg sold the printing press and rights to the Vinegar Tom Press to Spencer Maxwell. Gregg, however, kept Tom Vinegar as his nom de plume. Spencer Maxwell and Sally Armstrong published a bibliographic checklist of Vinegar Tom Press books and ephemera under the Maxwell Press imprint in 1992.
