Scope and Content

The David Craven papers contain personal correspondence between Dr. Craven and a wide variety of Latin American artists and intellectuals, most notably, Cuban art critic, Gerardo Mosquera. Also included are a wide variety of newspapers, periodicals, newsletters, and books relating to the art, politics, and culture of Latin America, with specific emphasis on Cuba and Nicaragua. A number of postcards, greeting cards, art exhibition handbills, tourist information, and other miscellaneous papers and memorabilia are included in the collection as well.

Biographical Information

Dr. David Craven had degrees in Art History from Vanderbilt University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was on the faculty at Duke University, the State University of New York at Cortland and was Professor of Art History at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Craven is recognized as a leading authority on the art and culture of the Nicaraguan Revolution, and his studies of Diego Rivera and Cuban art since 1959 have been widely celebrated. He has written 5 books and co-edited a 6th, while publishing many articles and review essays in the leading publications of 12 different countries. He has also given public lectures in English, Spanish and German, in over 40 different universities in Europe, the United States, Canada and Latin America and has been invited to lecture and write catalog essays for some of the world's foremost museums. Dr. Craven died on February 11, 2012.
