Scope and Content

This collection consists primarily of three journals of J. H. Allison, spanning the years 1908-1923, and covering the period of his work for the Forest Service in Arizona and New Mexico and later as a professor of forestry at the University of Minnesota. In his journals, Allison details forestry work in a number of locations, including Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, D.C., Arkansas and Minnesota. Allison’s forestry activities include calipering, timber assessment, reconnaissance and more. The journals also discuss daily life and social activities, weather conditions, personal and family experiences, travel (including details on modes of transportation) and an ongoing effort at real estate speculation in California. The collection also includes Allison's Forest Service Account book for 1909-1910. Also in the collection are digital copies of five albums of photographs taken by J.H. Allison, mostly during his work for the Forest Service in Arizona, 1906-1908, but including later family photos in Minnesota and in Wyoming, Montana and in Ontario, Canada in the 1920s. In addition, the collection contains a digital copy of the diary of Mabel Ann Shepard Allison, first wife of J.H. Allison, who died in 1920, as well as digital copies of three portraits of J.H. Allison. Related documents in the collection include a copy of letter to J.H. Allison from his mother, December 30, 1908; a copy of a 1908 letter from J.H. Allison to Gifford Pinchot; a copy a newspaper article about the life and work of J.H. Allison; and a copy of “The National Forest Service: In the Beginning, Photos and History of Early Days on the Southwest Region 3”, consisting of photos taken by J. H. Allison, 1906-1908 during his work for the Forest Service, with transcriptions of Allison's original captions.

Biographical Information

John Howard “Pop” Allison was born September 25, 1883 in East Granby, Connecticut. He attended Sheffield Scientific School at Yale, graduating in 1905. In 1906, Allison earned a master's degree from the Yale School of Forestry. From 1906-1913, Allison worked for the United States Forest Service, with assignments in Washington, D.C., the San Francisco Mountains National Forest Reserve/Coconino National Forest and Albuquerque, New Mexico. While in the Forest Service, Allison prepared the first Coconino National Forest Working Plan. On September 6, 1911, Allison married Mabel Ann Shepard. They had three children: John Howard Allison, Jr. (1913), Wallace (1916) and Ruth (later renamed Deborah) (1918). Allison resigned from the Forest Service in 1913 to become a professor in the College of Forestry at St. Paul, Minnesota, where he worked until his retirement in 1952. Mabel Ann Shepard Allison died of pneumonia on February 18, 1920. John Howard Allison died December 9, 1979 in St. Paul, Minnesota.
