Scope and Content

The collection contains New Mexico State Register nominations and associated documentation (photographs, correspondence, clippings) for the Goodson School and D. D. Monroe Civic Building/Clayton Public Library in Union County, NM. Also included is the New Mexico State Land Office publication, Goodson Memorial School, Union County, New Mexico: An Archaeological Survey and Preliminary Architectural Documentation of the 1936 WPA School Building Located in the Dry Cimarron River Valley, by David C. Eck, 2003. The collection also includes genealogical research on the Sayre and Monroe families. This research was for a potential update to Monroe's publication, Small Worlds: : the Frontier Settlement and Farm Life Worlds of the American Ancestors of Kendyl and Barbara Sayre Monroe, and the Westward Settlement of the United States to Northeast New Mexico.

Biographical Information

Kendyl Monroe was born on September 6, 1936 in Clayton, NM. He lived in Clayton until completing high school (1954). Monroe graduated from Stanford University (1958) and Stanford Law School (1960). He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Sayre in 1956.

Kendyl joined the Wall Street law firm Sullivan and Cromwell in 1960, and remained with them until he retired in 1994. He and Barbara then built and moved to an adobe home on Barbara’s family’s historic Sayre Ranch, 40 miles northwest of Clayton, NM. In 1995, Kendyl bought the nearby El Valle Escondido Ranch and spent his days restoring natural stone houses, making land improvements, and managing cattle and horses. Monroe also became involved in local ranching, agricultural, and historic preservation efforts. He also served on local boards and organizations, including the Eklund Association, Union County Medical Foundation, Union County Water Board, Clayton Rotary Club.

Monroe is credited with two publications, Small Worlds: the Frontier Settlement and Farm Life Worlds of the American Ancestors of Kendyl and Barbara Sayre Monroe, and the Westward Settlement of the United States to Northeast New Mexico (1994) and Charles Monroe (1823-1873) of Posey, Vanderburgh & Gibson County, Indiana: his Ancestors & Descendants (1997). In 2010, Kendyl and Barbara relocated to Bethesda, Maryland to be closer to their children. Kendyl passed away on November 14, 2016, having been preceded in death by Barbara.
