Biographical Information
John Brandi, poet and painter, is a native of Southern California. Born on November 5, 1943, Brandi received his BA in Art/Anthropology from California State University Northridge (1965). He served in the Peace Corps, Quechua communities, Andean Ecuador from 1966-1968, where he helped farmers in their struggle for land rights and civil liberties. In the Andes, he began publishing his poems in hand-sewn mimeograph editions. When he returned to the United States, he protested the Vietnam War, moved to Alaska, Mexico and back to the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, where he met Gary Snyder. Brandi’s first collection of prose poems, Desde Alla was published by David Meltzer in 1971. The same year, Brandi moved to New Mexico where he founded Tooth of Time Books, a small press devoted to poetry.
Brandi’s writing has been published in trade and small-press editions. During his early years in the American Southwest, Brandi traveled the high desert with Nanao Sakaki, compiled a collection of poetry titled, That Back Road In, and earned a living by teaching as an itinerant poet. In 1979, he received the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowhsip for Poetry. He continues to teach abroad and at home and has been recognized with awards and honors. Brandi lives in El Rito, New Mexico.
