Biographical Information

Jere L. Krakow was born on June 4, 1938 in Davenport, NE. His undergraduate degree was from Peru State College (NE), followed by his M.A. in U.S. History from the University of Wisconsin and a Doctorate from the University of Colorado. He was professor of history at Missouri State University in Springfield from 1967-1983. Krakow left academia for a career with the National Park Service in the mid-1980s. In 1995, he was named Superintendent of Long Distance Historic Trails for the Intermountain Region, and retired from the NPS in 1997.

Krakow’s research interest in the Fred Harvey Company developed while participating as a fellow in a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar on the American West at the Huntington Library in San Marino, CA (1978). Planning to write a company history, Krakow pursued the Fred Harvey Company/Amfac Inc. as potential sources of Harvey Company records. (Amfac acquired the Fred Harvey Company from descendants of Fred Harvey in 1968). Krakow eventually gained access to the records, and, with the assistance of Daggett Harvey Jr. (great-grandson of Fred Harvey and Amfac Board of Directors' member), he received some research funding and ultimately took possession of the records. Krakow’s research was interrupted when he left academia for the National Park Service. He died in Albuquerque, NM on November 3, 2017, without having produced his Fred Harvey Company history.
