Scope and Content

Collection contains primarily copies of documents and photos. Many of the originals would be difficult to find. Contains: genealogical information on the Ortiz and Delgado families, personal memoir, photos (facsimiles), copies of documents from AGN, unpublished manuscripts, other research material related to New Mexico, Ortiz / Delagado families and Ambasador Frank Ortiz. Contains copies of Delgado prueba de nobleza (from Seccion Nobleza AHN, Spain). Other copied materials related to Ortiz mines and copies of rare colonial doc related to the Perez Velarde family of NM.

Biography / History

Claire Ortiz Hill was born on May 11, 1951 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is descended from the Ortiz, Delgado, Larragoite, García de Noriega, and Valdes families of northern New Mexico and the old Texan Nichols and Sowell families. The Hill, Wilson and Ward branches of her family came to the Socorro area during the late 19th century. She received a BA in Philosophy at the age of 19 from the University of California, Riverside, followed by an MA in Comparative Literature. In addition, she holds a Masters and a Doctorate from the University of Paris, Sorbonne. On October 4, 1981 she made private vows as a religious hermit in Washington DC, where she worked as a parish social worker. Since October 1984, she has been a religious hermit in agreement with the Archdiocese of Paris, where she lives in an Adoration monastery and writes books and articles on the Austro-German roots of 20th century philosophy and other topics.
