Biography / History
Mrs. Briley was a graduate of the University of New Mexico, majoring in English and Biology. She was a poet, lecturer, teacher, editor and author, working as secretary in the Albuquerque Public School system. Mrs. Briley won numerous national and local awards for poetry and published over 400 poems appearing in the Wall Street Journal, Epos, Saturday Evening Post, Denver Post, Lyric, Good Housekeeping, and many other national magazines. She is listed in the International Who's Who in Poetry 1970-71, and the Writer's Directory, 1971-73. Mrs. Briley was the creator and editor of Encore, a Quarterly of Poetry and Related Arts, as well as the editor of Strophes, the national bulletin of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. She was the co-editor of "Turquoise Land" and "Sandscript", poetry anthologies. Mrs. Briley was the founder of the New Mexico Chapter of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, and served both as its local and national president. She was the president of the National League of American Pen Women in 1972. Mrs. Briley was also a member of the Mavericks, a distinguished group of professional writers from New Mexico. She was also instrumental in procuring the governor's proclamation of October 16th as Poetry Day in the state of New Mexico. Mrs. Briley was the author of "From a Weaver's Shuttle", which won the N M F S P S book contest in 1976. Her anthology, "Encore, Encore", was featured in the Peoples' Republic of China, as a fine example of American poetry.
