Biographical Note

Elias Sleeper Stover was elected the first president of the University of New Mexico on February 9, 1891 after the University was created by the Territorial legislature on February 28, 1889. Originally from Kansas, Stover arrived in Albuquerque in 1876. He previously had run successful mercantile shops throughout the West. Stover served as a County Commissioner of Bernalillo County from 1881 to 1883, he was a member of the New Mexico Constitutional Convention of 1889, and he was elected a member of the New Mexico Senate in 1891.

Stover presented the first graduating class of 1894 with their professional degrees. He passed the first regulations for UNM in 1894. In July 1895, a circular letter was sent throughout the Territory indicating the positive facts and attractions of the University's educational facilities. UNM was created before the New Mexico public school system was in place and was therefore primarily a preparatory school. Stover resigned as President in May 1897 in the aftermath of a lawsuit brought by Vice President Hiram Hadley who had resigned immediately following accusations made by Stover that Hadley was bribing students.
