Scope and Content
The collection contains black and white photos, postcards, ephemera, and periodical clippings from Peter H. Goldsmith's diplomatic work and travel throughout South America from 1915-1916. Countries included in this travel are: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. News clippings refer to Goldsmith's work with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Pan-American Association for International Conciliation. Subject matter of photos and postcards includes: ocean travel, landscapes, cityscapes, rural and urban life, and railroad construction. Clippings are in Spanish. Prints are 11 x 17 in.

Biography
Peter H. Goldsmith was born in 1865 and lived in both London, England and New York throughout his life as an author and diplomat. In the early 20th century, Goldsmith worked for the Pan-American Association for International Conciliation, a US-based organization of intellectuals in foreign service. In conjunction with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Goldsmith traveled extensively throughout Latin America from 1915-1916, attending diplomatic functions and speaking to political and governmental leaders. He was also involved in assessing several railroad construction projects in South America, and was a noted fan of the Peruvian music of Daniel Alomía Robles. Goldsmith published several books, including, Brief Bibliography of Books in English, Spanish and Portuguese, Relating to the Republics Commonly Called Latin America (1916), and An Authorized Digest of Desarollo Económico de la Repýblica de Argentina en los Últimos Cincuenta Años (1924).

Abstract
This collection of album pages from the family of Peter H. Goldsmith, contains black and white photos, postcards, ephemera, and periodical clippings from Goldsmith's work and travel throughout South America in 1916, primarily in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Arrangement
Album pages are organized thematically and geographically. This follows the ocean travel path of Peter Goldsmith, and reflects the original arrangement made by the scrapbook creator.
