Biography
T. Lynn Smith, rural sociologist, was born November 11, 1903 in Sanford, Colorado. He received his B.A. in Sociology and History in 1928 from Brigham Young University. He received his M.A. in Sociology in 1929 and his Ph.D. in Sociology with a minor in agricultural economics in 1932, both from the University of Minnesota. He was a professor and head of the Sociology departments at Louisiana State University (1931-1947), Vanderbilt University (1947-1949), and University of Florida (1949-1974), where he eventually retired from. Almost all of his research was, in one aspect or another, tied to rural sociology and demography. Much of his earlier research focused on the United States and specifically the South, while he went on to do a great deal of research in Latin America, with a strong emphasis on Brazil and Colombia. His research involved extensive traveling, some funded by grants and fellowships, and at times on assignments for the U.S. Department of State as an agricultural advisor to various countries. While his research encompasses a majority of the Latin American countries, a great deal of the collection is focused on Brazil and Colombia. He published extensively in books and journals throughout his career, which can be found in Zimmerman Library.
