Scope and Content

Collection contains portraits of Margaret K. Medler, her mother and her father, F.H. Kent, a group portrait of 7 young women of the Merry Go Round Club (c. 1895), including M.K. Medler and Mrs. O. A. Matson, and a curious photograph of 2 young women joking with Navajo men. Architectural photographs include the following buildings in Albuquerque: the F.H. Kent family home (10th St. & Park), the G.W. Gildersleeve Grocery Co., and the Armijo building (with a costumed child and burro in front). Interior shots include a stage production at the Crystal Theatre (1895) and the Bachelor Club Ball at the Commercial Club building (1896). Townscapes include: Rosita, Colo. (1877) and a bird's-eye view of "a mining town like Silver City." Prints are 25.5 cm x 35 cm. or smaller.

Biography

Margaret (Marguerite) Elizabeth Kent Medler (nee Kent), Albuquerque real estate agent and socialite, was born in 1873. She came to New Mexico in a covered wagon in 1880. Her father, Frederick H. Kent, built the family home in Albuquerque's New Town. Medler attended Albuquerque High School and Kentwood College in Illinois. She married lawyer Edward L. Medler in 1901; divorced in 1906. Margaret Medler devoted her time to moving in Albuquerque's social circles and to running her father's realty business, the F.H. Kent Agency. Medler died suddenly in 1942 in her Albuquerque home.
