Biography
William H. Bartlett was born April 27, 1850, in Peoria IL, into a prominent family descending directly from Josiah Bartlett, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. His father A.P. Bartlett was a pioneer merchant from Peoria, and his uncle Samuel C. Bartlett served for many years as president of Dartmouth College, where W.H. Bartlett graduated in 1870. Entering into the grain trading business immediately after graduation, Bartlett, with his brother S.C. Bartlett, and associate Frank P. Frazier, organized the firm of Bartlett, Frazier & Co., Chicago, IL. This was to be the first of many companies with which Bartlett was to be involved during his career. In 1902, Bartlett purchased over 400,000 acres from the Maxwell Land Grant Co. near Vermejo Park, NM. where Bartlett built three opulent homes, one for him and his wife, and one for each of their two sons. Bartlett established the Vermejo Club in the early 1900s, which was an exclusive hunting club and lodge. The Vermejo Club served the wealthiest of American businessmen, film celebrities, and former presidents. In 1910, Bartlett retired from the business world, spending most of his time between his ranches in New Mexico and Santa Barbara, CA. He died November 9, 1918 of heart disease at his ranch in New Mexico.
