Biography
William T. McCreight
William T. McCreight arrived in Albuquerque on September 17, 1880. A native of Kentucky, he came to New Mexico from St. Louis, Missouri. McCreight held a variety of journalistic and political positions. He was a charter member of the Albuquerque Typographical Union. McCreight was City Editor of the Albuquerque Daily Citizen and part owner of the Citizen during the infamous Borrego case, in which the editor and co-owner, Tom Hughes was sentenced and served sixty days in jail for publishing an inflammatory article allegedly written by Thomas B. Catron. McCreight ran the newspaper during Hughes imprisonment. McCreight was also associated with the morning and evening editions of the Albuquerque Journal, the Albuquerque Herald, the Albuquerque Tribune, and the Socorro Daily Sun. His columns covered the old days in Albuquerque, human interest articles, and lengthy obituaries of well-known citizens. He served Albuquerque as Fire Chief, City Clerk, and desk sergeant for the Police Department. He was the first president of the New Mexico Volunteer Firemans Association. Having been a baseball player for the St. Louis Browns, McCreight founded the Albuquerque Browns baseball team and put together a youth team, McCreights Colts. McCreight apparently left New Mexico around 1930.
