Scope and Content

This collection contains warranty deeds, leases, mortgages, and other documents pertaining to the Squire Hartt Jr. Ranch in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico, as well as the Cristobal de la Serna land grant. The collection also contains business documents such as bank loan receipts and tax receipts from the firm Hartt and García.

Biographical Information

Squire Hartt, Jr. was born in 1857 in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. He married Rufina Larragoite of Rio Arriba County. Hartt was a businessman who owned property in both Taos County, New Mexico and Conejos County, Colorado. Both he and his wife inherited significant quantities of land from their families and benefited from the Cristobal de la Serna land grant. Hartt's land came to be known as the Squire Hartt, Jr. Ranch and Rancho del Llano.

Ruben García was a business partner in the firm Hartt and Garcia, which sold general merchandise. Hartt and García also owned land together in Conejos County, Colorado. García was Hartt's son in law.
