Biographical Information

Myron Carson was born in Diagonal, Iowa, July 3 1923. He moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico with his family in 1932 and attended the city's public schools, graduating from Albuquerque High School in 1941. At age 14, Carson helped to establish the city's first YMCA Leader's Club, of which he served as first president. After high school, Carson enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in World War II, and was present at the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Aleutians, and the Battle of Iwo Jima. After his term of duty, Carson returned to Albuquerque and attended the University of New Mexico under the GI Bill. In 1952 Carson entered into public service, taking a position with the New Mexico State Employment Security Commission. He remained with the Commission until his retirement in 1978. During his tenure with the Employment Security Commission, Carson served as director of the various agencies assigned to special needs populations, among them, military veterans, the physically handicapped, minorities, and women. In 1961 Carson was assigned to the New Mexico Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, and was responsible for reorganizing the committee. He served as the executive director of the committee from 1969 until his retirement in 1978. In 1980, Carson emerged from retirement to advise the New Mexico Senate and House of Representatives on the drafting of new workers' compensation laws, which resulted in the New Mexico Workers' Compensation Act of 1984. These new compensation laws were passed in response to the widespread inefficiency and corruption of the previous workmen's compensation system. Carson was chosen as an advisor due to his longtime experience with employment issues throughout the state. Carson was also involved in developing and administering youth employment programs throughout the state, and was instrumental in the founding of Albuquerque's Technical-Vocational Institute (TVI).
