Pyramid Gold and Silver Mining and Reducing Company Certificates
Collection
Identifier: MSS-71-BC
Scope and Content
The collection contains approximately 275 bond certificates in denominations of one hundred, five hundred and one thousand dollars. Each certificate is uniquely numbered and signed by company secretary J.W. Martin, president J.S. Fowler, and trustee, W.R. Seward. Most of the certificates retain the coupons for interest payments, suggesting that the bonds were never sold. There are also a few empty envelopes in the collection, and the names and notes on the envelopes indicate that they were used to send money or share certificates between creditors and the company.

History
The Pyramid Gold and Silver Mining and Reducing Company issued bonds in Silver City, New Mexico, against the assets of its operations in Pyramid City. The bonds were issued in 1883 and were redeemable in 1885. Pyramid City was a small mining camp in the Virginia (Shakespeare) and Pyramid Mining District, and is just south of Shakespeare and Lordsburg, New Mexico. In the 1880s, Pyramid City was in Grant County, although today it is located in Hildalgo County. It is difficult to determine exactly when the Pyramid Gold and Silver Mining and Reducing Company was formed and when it disappeared, although Pyramid City had only twenty-five permanent residents in 1897, suggesting that by then, its boom was over.
