Biography/History

The New Mexico Junior Classical League was a statewide organization for high school students. In 1969 there were 22 chapters in New Mexico. According to the New Mexico Junior Classical League's 1967 revised constitution, the purpose of the state federation "shall be to coordinate the activities of the chapters in the state and to exchange ideas and to extend the work of the JCL to other schools." Formed in 1936, the National Junior Classical League (NJCL) is an organization of junior and senior high school students sponsored by the American Classical League and composed of local and state/provincial chapters across the United States, Canada, and Australia. Its purpose is to "encourage an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature and culture of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity." Part of the NJCL creed reads "We affirm that the NJCL experience develops responsibility, fosters brotherhood, promotes enthusiasm, encourages competition, inspires dedication and enriches our total growth." The organization holds state and national conferences. At the state convention various contests are held in academic, creative arts, and graphic arts. In 1960 the national conference was held at the University of New Mexico. Today there are 665 chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada with 1 chapter for the New Mexico/Far West Texas area.
