Institutional History
In 1579, the first university 'course' on European medicine was offered on the American continent. It was here at the Real y Pontificia Universidad de M?xico in Mexico City that the teaching of European medicine in the Americas would initially occur. Following European methods of instruction, the medical techniques taught at the University changed little over the first few centuries. After Mexican independence, the University officially changed its name to the Universidad de M?xico which housed the Instituto de Ciencias M?dicas. The first director of the Institute was Casimiro Liceaga, while Manuel Carpio, Pedro Escobedo, Pedro del Villar and Jos? Mar?a Ben?tez were his teaching colleagues. In 1854, the Institute moved from its initial location to the Santo Domingo building and was renamed the School of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). During the twentieth century the school was lead by multiple directors, including Jos? M. V?rtiz, Leopoldo R?o de la Loza, Raf?el Lucio, Franciscio Ortega, Manuel Carmona y Valle, and Eduardo Liceaga.
