Scope and Content
This photocopy of a ledger book contains the script for the Christmas nativity play Los Pastores, as written by Jacobo Lucero. Mr. Lucero was from Ranchos de Albuquerque and wrote the play down just prior to his death in 1939. The ledger book contains 71 pages of the text and songs, as well as an additional script for the "SentencÃa de Jesús" by Pontius Pilate and a post-script written by Jacobo Lucero. The characters appearing in this version of Los Pastores are: Angel, Gila, Bato, Tebano, Tubal, Rotin, Oguias, Eras, Afron, Bartado, el Hermitaño and el Diablo.

History
Los Pastores is a Catholic nativity play which descended from medieval Spain. Often referred to as pastorelas, coloquios, or auto sacramentales, Los Pastores has its roots in the Italian Officium Pastorum, or Office of the Shepherds. After its beginning in Italy, the cultural practice was established in Spain in many different forms. When the Spanish colonized Mexico, the Aztecs already had a system of troubadours, called tlaquetzqui, who traveled and recited oral histories and religious stories. With the violent and long lasting effects of the conquest, much of the indigenous culture and life ways was either destroyed or repressed. Yet with a pre-European tradition of theater and religious plays, indigenous and mestizo culture in Mexico began to practice the traditions of the pastorela play, maintaining the names of the original Spanish characters.
In New Mexico and the Southwest, the pastorela tradition arrived as early as 1598 with Juan de Oñate and his expedition of ladino, mestizo and indigenous peoples from Mexico. Church records indicate that the play was being performed in New Mexico in 1776. According to scholars, the play has at least three different forms, depending on its place of origin and path of migration. During the Mexican colonial period, the pastorela went through many changes. Originally used as a tool by the Catholic Church for the indoctrination of indigenous peoples, Los Pastores was adopted by the mestizo and de-tribalized indigenous communities and used as an instrument of religious maintenance and cultural identity. Los Pastores has become an important element of Chicana/o life in the United States.

Abstract
This collection contains a photocopy manuscript of the script for the pastorela play, Los Pastores, written by Jacobo Lucero of Ranchos de Albuquerque. The manuscript contains a character list and script, including text and songs. It was written just prior to the death of the author in 1939.
