Scope and Content

This small collection consists of 1 envelope containing 4 folders. The collection was compiled by Robert Zimmerman, David Chavez's publicity director during the 1950 gubernatorial campaign. The collection includes speeches and radio addresses, campaign materials, press releases, and correspondence. The collection provides an insider's look at New Mexico politics in the 1950s. The politics of ethnic identity, hardball campaign strategies, education, corruption, economic development, and human rights are some of the timeless political issues that this collection sheds light upon.

Biographical Information

David Chavez Jr., former federal judge in Puerto Rico and brother to Dennis Chavez, U.S. Senator from New Mexico, ran against John Miles and Ingram Pickett for the democratic nomination for governor of New Mexico in 1950. John Miles won. After losing the election, David Chavez went into law practice in Albuquerque.
