Scope and Content
This collection consists of photocopies of handwritten volumes used in the Semana Santa (Holy Week) rituals of the Hermandad de Nuestro Padre de Jesus, held at the Templo San Agustin in Durango, Mexico. Included are two coloquios, or dialogs, and six handwritten songbooks collected by Cecile Turrietta in the city of Durango. The songbooks, containing alabados, belong to the members of the Hermandad. During Holy Week the Hermandad are divided up into eight choirs. Each takes its turn singing in the Templo to provide continuous music for the faithful.
Folder 1 contains Turrietta's detailed memo explaining how she obtained the copies of the songbooks and additional information regarding Semana Santa traditions in Durango. This folder also contains an alphabetical list, compiled by Thomas J. Steele, of the songs found in each volume. The label, Cuaderno, next to each songbook in the inventory relates to Steele's list. Most of the material is in Spanish.

Project history
Cecile Turrietta travelled to Durango, Mexico during Holy Week in 1994 to attend the religious services of the Hermandad de Nuestro Padre Jesus at the Templo San Agustin. A grant from the Center for Regional Studies at the University of New Mexico funded this project which was to investigate the origins of the Penitente Brotherhood in New Mexico, and to compare the types and uses of images during Holy Week ceremonies in San Agustin with those in the Santuario de Chimayo to determine whether the Santuario de Chimayo was ever used as a Penitente morada.
