Organizational History

The New Mexico Route 66 Association was organized in 1969 to preserve historic Route 66. The statewide association encourages the development of neighborhood revitalization projects, civic awareness and the promotion of tourism along the roadway. Route 66 was commissioned in 1928, and it was the nation's first interstate west. During its heyday, Route 66 served as the vital transportation artery between Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California. During the depression era many unemployed "pilgrims" migrated west along the Route 66 in search of a brighter future in California. In the early years, many remote sections of Route 66 remained unpaved, following old cattle paths and wagon tracks. Route 66 opened up the "wild west" and became the twentieth-century's "Santa Fe Trail." Upon the completion and opening of Interstate 40, Route 66 was decertified as a federal highway in June of 1985. The New Mexico Route 66 Association, along with other Route 66 associations, continues to preserve and maintain America's well known highway and historical landmark.
