Historical Information

The New Mexico Architectural Foundation (N.M.A.F.) was founded in 1987, with the goal of promoting architectural excellence in New Mexico by stimulating public awareness of architectural traditions. It was formed primarily to be eligible to receive grants to sponsor programs. N.M.A.F. also planned to produce publications such as tour guides to New Mexico architecture, and to acquire museum and archival materials relating to architecture in New Mexico. Fund raising for activities such as giving grants for research pertaining to to New Mexico's architectural history and awarding scholarships to New Mexico architectural students has been another goal for the New Mexico Architectural Foundation. Successful fundraising events have included art sales and auctions, field trips, walking tours, and house tours through architecturally significant areas around the state. The Foundation sponsors exhibitions, shows, lectures and seminars to increase public awareness of New Mexico's architecture and architectural traditions. The Foundation supports an active public relations campaign about architecture, architectural awards, and architectural restoration and preservation activities throughout the State. N.M.A.F. established guidelines for the preservation and restoration of historic adobe buildings. Some of the projects that N.M.A.F. was involved with include the "Churches: Symbols of the Community" project (1988-1992), "Celebrate Youth" (1992-1993), "Architecture and Children" (1987-1995), and the 2001 publication of Recording a Vanishing Legacy: The Historic American Buildings Survey in New Mexico, 1933-Today. The Foundation's presidents have included Harold Joe Waldrum, Van Dorn Hooker, George Pearl, Jan Dodson Barnhart.
