Scope and Content
Archive 594 contains material relevant to the history of Northern Mexico, particularly the state of Coahuila, during the late years of the Mexican Revolution and the early 1920's. The collection contains correspondence, government documents, political advertising, and other materials from the files of Arnulfo Gonzalez, Provisional Governor of the State of Chihuahua, 1916-1918 and Governor of the State of Coahuila, Mexico, 1921-1923. The years 1921-1923 represent the bulk of the collection.

Biographical Information
Arnulfo (Medina) Gonzalez was born in Villa de Juarez, Coahuila, Mexico, April 23, 1886 to Pedro Gonzalez Ortega and Jeronima Medina. He died April 10, 1962. Sena±or Gonzalez completed his primary studies in Villa de Juarez, secondary and preparatory studies at Ateneo Fuente, Saltillo, and legal studies at the National School of Law, Mexico. He apparently practiced law without completing a degree thesis.
Gonzalez taught primary school in Piedras Negras and Zaragoza, Mexico, until 1913. He joined the Democratic Party, became executive secretary, and supported the Francisco I. Madero rebellion of 1910. In 1913, Gonzalez joined the Constitutionalists, fought under General Pablo Gonzalez as a 2nd captain, and supported Venustiano Carranza against Francisco Villa, 1914-1915. During the years 1915-1916 González became chief of staff, 2nd Division, Army of the Northeast, under General Francisco Murguia and would later be forced to leave his governorship because of kinship to General Murguia, who supported the Adolfo de la Huerta rebellion of 1923.
Gonzalez became military commander of Coahuila in 1916, attaining the rank of brigadier general and chief of staff of various military zones. He became provisional governor of Durango, 1916, provisional governor of Chihuahua, 1916-1918, governor of the Federal District, 1918-1919, and governor of the state of Coahuila, 1921-1923. Also during his military and political career, Gonzalez would serve as director of the Cavalry Department, Secretariat of War; director of the Justice Department, Secretariat of War; official mayor of public works; secretary of the Army and Navy Bank; and Commander of the Legion of Honor. He retired from the army in 1949.

Conservation Report
The collection was received in poor condition. Papers were generally torn, folded or wrinkled, and many pages are contaminated with mold. Papers have, since processing, been relieved of all metal fasteners, smoothed and unfolded and interleaved where appropriate for conservation or to keep groups in context. Newsprint has been photocopied. Groups of papers formerly attached with metal fasteners have been interleaved for conservation purposes and to keep associated papers in context.
