Institutional History
La Compañia de Teatro de Alburquerque was formed in January 1977 to provide a forum for professional development of the bilingual drama professionals and to preserve the rich Hispanic heritage of New Mexico. Dr. Miguel Encinias, then Director of the Multicultural Education Program at the University of Albuquerque, extended an invitation to actor-director José Rodríguez to conduct a workshop in Spanish drama for bilingual student teachers. The enthusiastic response to the workshop led to the formation of the theater company.
Mr. Rodríguez was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and a member of the Spanish Repertory Company of New York. La Compañia focussed on presenting new works by native New Mexican writers, as well as a selection of works from contemporary Latin America and Spanish language classics. A special award was given to La Compañia at the Fourth "Siglo de Oro" Chamizal International Drama Festival in 1979. In 1984 the La Compañia was invited to perform at the Edinburgh Theater Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland and at the Fourth Latin American Popular Theatre Festival, sponsored by Joseph Papp, in New York City, New York.
