Scope and Content

The Roswell Oral History Project collection consist of 31 taped interviews on 42 cassette tapes, with transcripts, and the transcript only for one additional interview. The interviews were conducted in 1985 by Dr. Ray Burrola with Hispanic and Mexican American residents of Roswell, New Mexico. The project was funded by the Southwest Hispanic Research Institute located at the University of New Mexico. This project was also known as Mutualistas: The Roswell Experience. Topics discussed in the interviews include family and local history, ethnic identity, social life, and customs.

The interviewees include: Josefina Alizza, Manuelita Analla, Reynalda Analla, Ysidro Anally, Gene Anaya, Semona Baiza, Elizabeth Baiza, Josefita Brady, Matias Briseno, Veronica Burrola, Moises Burrola, Martha Carillo, Rosa Carrillo, Dionicio Chavez, Erminda Cobos, Juan Cobos, Jesus De Llano, Jesusita De Llano, Gregorio Dominguez, Trinidad Escobar, Juanita Espinoza, Raquel Fierro, Sofia Fuentes, Lola Garcia, Adan Leaton, Cecilia Lucero, Abel Lujan, Beniga C. Lujan, Anne G. Martinez, Maria Melendez, Ralph Melendez, Simona Meza, Simona Meza, Lorencita Mireles, Beatrice Mireles, Mary Ortega, Eloy Ortega, Oralia Ortega, Petra Romo, Ismael Sanchez, Frank Sedillo, Nell Sedillo, Betty Sedillo, Andres Sedillo, Robert Shanks, Elisa Shanks. The interviews are in Spanish or combinations of Spanish and English.
