Scope and Content

The George Kubler papers consist of his unpublished masters thesis, a literary manuscript of a published work based on his dissertation, along with editorial notes and photographs. The Religious Architecture of New Mexico In the Colonial Period and Since the American Occupation was published in 1940 by the Taylor Museum of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. The manuscript is the original Kubler submitted for his Ph.D. dissertation. Of special interest are photographs not included in the 1940 publication. Photographs are housed in CSWR Pictorial Collections. An addition to the collection contains a published article by Kubler.

Biographical Information

George Alexander Kubler, art historian, writer and teacher, was born July 26, 1912, in Los Angeles. Professor Kubler had a distinguished career at Yale University and held visiting professorships at the University of Chicago; University of San Marcos, Lima, Peru; University of Mexico; Harvard University and University of Pennsylvania. He is a three-time recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship. He received the Alice Davis Hitchcock Award for Architectural History, the Charles Rufus Morey Prize of the College Art Association and the Premio Jose de Figuerirede, Lisbon. George Kubler passed away in 1996.
