Scope and Content

The collection contains oral history interviews with Dorothy Hughes, conducted in March 1989 in El Paso, Tex. by Rose Diaz. In the interviews Hughes discusses her time as a graduate student at the University of New Mexico, writing the fifty year history of the University, her writing career, and her friends and family.

There are no transcripts for the interviews.

The collection also includes one signed letter from Hughes to her publisher, 1964.

Biography

Dorothy Belle Hughes was born in Kansas City, Mo. on August 10, 1904. She was educated at the University of Missouri, Columbia University and the University of New Mexico. After many attempts at writing a mystery novel, Hughes' book, The So Blue Marble, was published in 1940. Thereafter she became a prolific mystery writer and critic. She has published fifteen novels, several short stories in magazines such as Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and Cosmopolitan and many book reviews in the Albuquerque Tribune, the Los Angeles News and Mirror and the New York Herald Tribune. Hughes has also published poetry and nonfiction and is known in New Mexico for her history of the first fifty years of the University of New Mexico, Pueblo on the Mesa.
