Scope and Content

Nina Galen's Papers relate to her literary career. The initial collection is arranged in two series. Series l consists of her published works: five novels published between l967 and l982, the related manuscript materials, correspondence and book reviews; and magazine articles. Series 2 is comprised of unpublished materials and includes childhood prose and poetry, poetry written while Ms. Galen lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, an unpublished novel, and manuscript materials and correspondence related to four musical comedies.

Several additions to the collection have been processed. The October 1997 addition includes correspondence with publishers, and miscellaneous personal correspondence, as well as drafts of various unpublished works including short stories, one and two act plays, children's stories, and a collection of Ms. Galen's college papers.

A November 2002 addition includes newspaper columns, productions for radio broadcast, poems, plays, and prose in holographic and typescript formats. Works include "True Adventures of Plaster Cats," "Gripes of Wraith," "Meltdown of Lidia Morning Dew," "Two Years Later," "Croc," "Kroh," and "Secret of the Rainforest," among others.

Another addition to the collection was processed in April 2008. This primarily includes photographs, manuscripts, audio (CD) files, daily planners, and assorted miscellany. The majority of the additional materials are housed in box 5, however, some have been integrated into related existing folders (and so noted in the contents list).

Biography

Author Nina Galen passed away in May 2008, in Brooklyn, New York. Nina Galen wrote under her own name, as well as using pseudonyms Bruce Buck and Charles Nicolo. Born in Greenwich Village, New York City, she was raised in Los Angeles, California. She received a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of California at Los Angeles in l955. From l978 to l983 she lived in New Mexico, earning a master's degree in English (Creative Writing Program) from the University of New Mexico in l983.

Ms. Galen also lived in Europe for l7 years (from l960 to l977), flying airplanes and gliders for l0 of those years. Numerous articles she wrote about her flights and travels were published regularly in Pilot magazine, London. While living in New Mexico, she taught a continuing education course at the College of Santa Fe entitled "The Flyer's World: a non-technical introduction to meteorology, navigation and aerodynamics."

In addition to her aviation articles, most of which appeared in Pilot from l973 to l986, and a article on Lord Jim published in l9th Century Fiction (June l983), Nina Galen's literary works include five published novels. They are The Rennlaufer (New York and London, l967, and a French paperback edition, Le Rennlaufer, l970); The Grape Vine (London, l970 and in paperback, l972); Monopoly on Terror, a paperback novel by Bruce Buck (New York, l978); and Eden Motel and To Love Flaminio (Santa Fe, l982); Croc and Kroh, two novellas in verse (1999) and The Acts of a PaganJew (2005).

Ms. Galen's literary efforts awaiting publication include poetry, four musical comedies Her first mystery story, "A Cast With Character," was published July l988 in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine under the name, Charles Nicolo.
