Institutional History
The White House was opened in 1912 by Emil and Johanna Uhlfelder, and its first four years were formative in establishing its name and reputation throughout the region. Emil Uhlfelder, a native of Regensburg, Bavaria, came to the West in 1879 to participate in the frontier merchandise business. After he died at the age of 55 in 1916, his wife Johanna remarried, and her new husband Morris Blatt started a small but highly lucrative business empire. In 1924, Johanna Blatt's daughter, Pauline Uhlfelder married Barnett Petchevsky, owner of a local shoe store. The Guarantee Shoe Shop, for all intents and purposes, became part of the family business empire. The owners of the individual companies often went on business trips for and with each other. Although Morris Blatt died in 1944 and his wife sometime thereafter, the business continues today managed by the grandchildren in the same location on the Plaza in Santa Fe. After the original White House business had been sold, Jean Petchevsky and Marion Petchevsky-Silver merged businesses to form the Guarantee Incorporated.
