Institutional History
Manzano, New Mexico was settled in approximately 1829. It is a small Spanish village with homes scattered around the mountain fed spring known as the Ojo del Gigante (eye of the giant).
About the same time as settlement in 1829, the citizens petitioned to construct a chapel and cemetery area to be named Nuestra Senora de los Dolores, later known as Our Lady of Sorrows. The original chapel was constructed in a planting field some distance from the settlement. Because of the threat of Indian raids and the inaccessibility of the chapel in bad weather, it was decided that the church would be relocated to the Plaza de Apodaca in Manzano. This remained a mission church of Tome until it became a parish church in 1869. It has remained and functioned as a focal point of the community throughout its history.
