Scope and Content
The collection consists of Mr. Furlong's research notes for his dissertation. These fall into three categories: articles, index cards, various documents.
There are approximately 126 articles, largely xeroxed from both English and Portuguese sources. Included are also copies of essays written by students. There are some 2 linear feet of 4" x 6" index cards and 1/2' of 6" x 8" index cards. These can be further divided into research cards and miscellaneous cards. The documents section consists of various sundry sources.

Biography
Edward J. Furlong was born in Minnesota in 1929. He received a B.A. in 1951, and another B.A. in Foreign Trade from the American Institute of Foreign Trade in Arizona in 1962. He received his M.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1966.
Mr. Furlong worked for seven years as coordinator of overseas field relief for the Catholic Relief Service in Columbia and northeastern Brazil.
He attended the UNM History Department from 1968 until his death in August 1983. He worked on a dissertation entitled "Catholic Social Action in Brazil, 1922-1939;" his advisor was Dr. Robert Kern from the History Department.
These papers, the bulk of his dissertation research, were donated to the Special Collections by Dr. Carl Hanson.
