Scope and Content

The New Mexico women's Political Caucus collection consists of documents generated by the organization, including by-laws, histories, correspondence, financial records, State Steering Committee minutes (1973-1983), newsletters, brochures, and convention and workshop agendas. The administrative series also contains material on candidates for state offices, including questionnaires, endorsements, political flyers, clippings, and brochures. Documents in the subject files address women's issues such as abortion-rights, rape, federal and state equal rights amendments, state community property legislation, credit discrimination, and the New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women. Newspaper clippings regarding events of interest to NMWPC are included in addition to selected copies of the Southwestern Right to Choose Newsletter and Equal Rights Monitor.

The collection includes material from the National Women's Political Caucus conventions as well as material from the Santa Fe, Doña Ana County and Bernalillo County Chapters. Most of the chapter records are from the Bernalillo County Women's Political Caucus (BCWPC). They cover 1973-1984 and include by-laws, chapter goals, Steering Committee minutes, correspondence, membership information, newsletter, financial records, meeting programs and workshops. The records covering 1971-1979 of the Women's Political Caucus of Doña Ana County (WPCDAC) consist of correspondence, business meeting minutes, newsletter and agendas. The Santa Fe Women's Political Caucus has a small amount of material from 1973-1985.

Biography or History

The New Mexico women's Political Caucus (NMWPC), a not-for-profit organization, was officially organized in 1973. Affiliated with the nationally based Women's Political Caucus, the goal of NMWPC was to promote the role of women in politics and raise awareness of women's issues through research, publicity, and lobbying. Activities included publishing informational brochures, organizing state and local conventions, lobbying for legislation, and promoting and encouraging women seeking political office. Issues of concern to NMWPC included abortion rights, the equal rights amendment (ERA), rape laws, child care, credit discrimination, and issues pertaining to women's employment, economic status, education, and property rights.
