W.S. Burke Deeds

Scope and Content
This collection contains eight Bernalillo county deeds in which members of the Burke family had ownership. The collection contains warranty deeds, deeds of trust, a quitclaim deed, and a deed of release. Most of the deeds are signed by W. S. Burke and his wife, Abby U. Burke; others are signed by Burke relatives, Jacobo Yrisarri (Sheriff of Bernalillo County), or Hannah B. and Noel E. Stevens.

Biographical Information
W. S. Burke was a veteran of the Civil War who came to Albuquerque, New Mexico in the early 1880's. In 1885, he was the first Superintendent of Public Instruction of Bernalillo County, which at that time included parts of present day Sandoval, McKinley and Torrance counties. Burke worked as an editorial writer for the Albuquerque Morning Journal in the early 1900's.
