Scope and Content

This collection contains a handwritten manuscript of Ojo del Gallo, notes from the research which led to this publication, and the published version of this book which describes the history, social life and customs, foodways, politics, religion, marriage customs, early businesses, and military contributions of the town of San Rafael, New Mexico. The collection also contains correspondence regarding the permissions required for this book and the publication process, itself. It also contains memorabilia from the business of her ancestor, Romulo Barela.

Most documents are in English, though one is in Spanish.

Biographical Information

Josephine Barela was born and raised in San Rafael, New Mexico in 1898, descendant of Rómulo Barela, one of San Rafael's earliest settlers. She obtained a teachers' diploma from a renowned eastern conservatory of music, following which she taught piano lessons privately in San Rafael, and worked as a secretary. Josephine Barela became ill while she wrote her manuscript of Ojo del Gallo. Barela's manuscript was published posthumously, by her friends, Margaret and John Bonomo, after Barelas' death in 1972.
