Scope and Content
The John Baron Burg collection contains Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia County land, property and business records from the Burg and Otero families. It also contains political and personal correspondence dealing with family matters and Burg’s campaign for Albuquerque Post Master and New Mexico District Attorney. The collection also contains three scrapbooks with newspaper clippings, letters, voting ballots, political cartoons and ephemera. One scrapbook contains clippings of a column series on the history of Valencia County written by Burg. Another scrapbook is composed of clippings about the dispute between Burg and the Albuquerque City Commission regarding the lighting franchise given to the Albuquerque Gas and Electric Company.

Biography
John Baron Burg was born in Washington, D.C., on May 31, 1878. He attended Georgetown University and began his legal career in 1898. He came to Albuquerque in 1906 and was admitted to the Bar of the Second Judicial District Court on April 6, 1909. Burg served as probate judge of Bernalillo County and in the first state legislature of New Mexico. In 1936 he was elected district attorney of the Seventh Judicial District. Burg was interested in real estate and in various corporate enterprises. He developed a number of sub-divisions in Albuquerque and served as president of several companies. Burg died in Albuquerque on December 7, 1943.
