English Lease Indentures
Collection
Identifier: MSS-328-OV
Scope and Content
The collection contains two lease indentures for property in and around London, England, one written in 1865 and the other in 1846. The first indenture describes the lease arrangement between John Henry Ellis Ridley and Robert Miller. In this agreement, Miller leased Ridley's property in the Battersea suburb of London. The lease was valued at ?80/year for 99 years, and it appears to be an extension of an earlier lease produced in 1775 between John Earl Spencer and Thomas Rhodes.
The second lease document describes an agreement between William Robert Bayley and George Parrot in 1846. It concerns land in Middlesex County, England, and its term was seventy-four years. This lease appears to be an extension of an 1827 agreement between John Francis, William Dempsey, and William Robert Bayley.
The pages are ornately decorated with various large script-like letters, words, and wax seals. The 1865 document is written on two sheets of velum stitched together at the bottom edge. The collection was previously called English Legal Documents.
