Scope and Content
This collection consists of a single journal, or diary, of Charles March Stephens, 1884. The fly page notes that Stephens lived at 1013 14th St. NW, Washington, D.C., when he began the diary. Traveling frequently, he visited New York City, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New Hampshire, taking his journal with him. Regular entries in the diary are dated January 1 - March 6, 1884, with a few more irregular entries up until June 13 of the same year. Stephens recorded the weather, his expenses, and made notes about school and family matters. He also showed an interest in politics, particularly the Republican Party.

Biography
Charles March Stephens was born November 29, 1866, in Detroit, Michigan. His mother died when he was six weeks old, and his father died when he was about one year old. After that he was raised by his grandmother, J.W. Van de Walker, in Kalamazoo Michigan. Stephens was a teenager living in Washington, D.C. when he began to keep his first daily journal. He was only 35 when he died in 1901.
