Scope and Content
This small collection contains an unrevised proof copy of his California-based novel, Sweet Thursday, published by Viking Press. In addition, there are two letters of correspondence between Steinbeck and Roland Dickey, editor of University of New Mexico Press, concerning the publication of a compilation of criticism of Steinbeck's work. Also included is a typescript of "Rationale," which Steinbeck sent along with one of the letters to Dickey. The collection also includes a letter containing Steinbeck's comments on his own writing.

Biography/History
American novelist John Steinbeck, 1902-1956, wrote primarily on themes that reflected his upbringing in the California Central Valley city of Salinas. Noted for his socially critical work, his writing won many awards including the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968.
