Biography
Warren A. Beck was born in 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He received degrees from Wayne State and Ohio State universities. Known as a historian and expert on Western America, Beck has authored more than ten books. New Mexico, a History of Four Centuries, published in 1962, has been reprinted 14 times.
New Mexico Magazine called New Mexico, a History of Four Centuries "a readable account of New Mexico history that hits the high spots of the past 400 years" and which presents "a good general picture of New Mexico past and present." Critics of the book note that as a mere settler of Eastern New Mexico, rather than a life-long resident, Beck's "eastern New Mexico slant" on history is apparent.
Beck taught at Eastern New Mexico University for three years, and then at California State University at Fullterton for three decade, where he served as Chairman of the History Department, and where he was pivotal in shaping history instruction.
