Scope and Content
This collection contains century-old quartermaster documents detailing the financial affairs of the U.S. Army in Albuquerque ten years after the American acquisition of New Mexico. The records involve rentals, purchases of supplies, payments to civilian employees and payroll for military personnel. The payments recorded reflect various types of military spending, including, in one case, remuneration paid to individuals returning deserters to the Army.

Biography or History
Daniel Henry Rucker, 1812-1910, was a commander of wagon trains for E.V. Sumner on the Santa Fe Trail, as well as being in the employ of the U.S. Army. By the end of his military career, Rucker had made Brigadier General and was acting Paymaster during the Civil War. In 1858, Rucker was the Assistant Quartermaster stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Quartermaster Corps was a former branch of the U.S. Army responsible for supplying soldiers with quarters, clothing, food, etc. It was equivalent to the sector of the military now known as U.S. Army Material Command.
