Scope and Content
The collection contains one letter, dated June 4, 1874, petitioning the Honorable J. W. Marshall, first assistant postmaster general (Washington D.C.) for a post office to be established at the head of the Tularosa Cañon at the White Sulphur Springs. The petition is signed by 27 individuals.

History
The post office at White Sulphur Springs, N.M. was established in 1875. The settlement, 16 miles northeast of Tularosa on US 70 became known as South Fork from 1875-1887. Sometime during this period, the post office moved to Blazers Mill, and circa 1887, it moved to the home of the agent for the Mescalero Apache and the post office was renamed Mescalero.
