History

The Western Brewery and Ice Company was incorporated in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1916, after Jacob Korber, Owen N. Marron and other local businessmen acquired the assets of the debt-ridden Southwestern Brewery and Ice Company. Korber (1860-1921) was a well-known Albuquerque blacksmith and mercantilist, and he became president of the fledgling brewery. Marron (1861-1945) was an Albuquerque lawyer and politician, and served as mayor of the city from 1899-1901. He was the vice-president of the Western Brewery and Ice Company. Their business was generally successful, selling beverages (including beer) to the community and ice to the railroads for cooling their refrigerated rail cars. The company was sold to the Western Ice and Bottling Company in Albuquerque in 1921, coinciding with Korbers untimely death in a truck accident in January 1921, and with the onset of prohibition in January 1920. Marron became the president of the Western Ice and Bottling Company upon its creation.
