Historical Information
Presbyterian missionary, Dr. John Menaul was sent to Laguna Pueblo in 1876. The following year, he acquired a small printing press which became known as the Laguna Mission Press. Within eight months, Menaul had printed 3,875 pages on this press, which was the first printing press located in an Indian Pueblo. Most of the material Menaul printed was in the form of teaching aids, including a catechism, selections from the Bible, two editions of McGuffey's First Reader, and annual reports. Menaul's were the first American Indian-English publications in New Mexico. Menaul and the Laguna Mission printing press moved to Albuquerque, circa 1889.
